The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has undertaken a major internal reorganization, rebranding its core research group and letting go of some personnel as part of a strategic overhaul.

In a June 2 update, EF announced that its former Protocol Research & Development (PR&D) unit is now rebranded as “Protocol,” which will focus on three key areas: scaling Ethereum’s Layer 1, expanding blobspace for rollups, and improving overall user experience (UX).

“Building protocol infrastructure is complex, often requiring rapid responses to unclear and evolving demands,” the EF stated.

This rebrand aligns with Ethereum’s push toward broader adoption, fueled by innovations in zkEVMs and Layer 2 scaling tools.

“This moment could be Ethereum’s strongest opportunity to scale not just technology, but also its values, across the planet.”

The restructuring has led to organizational changes. Veteran contributors like Tim Beiko, Alex Stokes, and Barnabé Monnot have been reassigned to lead focus areas, while some PR&D members have exited the team. EF did not disclose how many were affected.

“Protocol is now leaner, more focused, and better coordinated,” said the Foundation.

Ongoing Leadership Reforms at Ethereum

EF’s recent months have seen a series of leadership and governance adjustments. In January, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced a shift in governance strategy, aiming for more technical alignment and improved communication with developers.

This move triggered internal debate over EF’s strategic goals and transparency efforts.

In April, EF further refined its structure by splitting executive duties from the board. Two new co-executive directors were appointed: Ethereum veteran Hsiao-Wei Wang and Nethermind CEO Tomasz Stańczak.

Under this model, the board — including Buterin — now sets long-term vision, while the executive team manages day-to-day operations.
